One of it’s kind and quite inconspicuous but yet pulsating in its own way, is the famous Sharky’s Casino Manchester Poker Room primarily running as a charity poker room situated in the industrial city of Manchester, New Hampshire around thirty minutes north of Massachusetts. The room has its doors open seven days a week until midnight and permits those aged 18 and above. Since alcohol is not served out here, the young age limit is acceptable. The schedule of poker tournaments varies from weekdays to weekends with 4 multi-tables in the weekdays and 5 on the weekends, with a special deep-stack event on a Saturday afternoon along with interesting cash games.
The room is well arranged with 18 tables, painted brick walls, scanty decoration, an exceptional high ceiling with glowing lights, proper ventilation and a snack bar on the rear. The snack bar offers a good spread with sandwiches, salads, burgers, side dishes and dinner specials. The prices are affordable and a good variety of soft drinks are served.
The mix of people seen at the poker room is interesting with the old and the young having a pleasurable time. The tournaments are well organized and are steered by experienced and friendly dealers. Blackjack and roulette are also available and the poker players snatch a moment to go and play these exciting games during intervals while playing poker. You can also play online casino games if you bring your laptop along when you have spare time during the tournaments.
This game of poker gives a lot of importance to etiquette and demands that you show respect to your fellow players, treat others the way you would like to be treated, and don’t be ‘heard’ but ‘seen’. This is actually not expecting too much from players but requesting a high order of courtesy. A few ground rules to keep in mind:
1. English is the only language that you can speak at the poker tables as it is a universal language and any other language may send out the wrong signals to fellow players.
2. Practice on the ‘play for fun’ mode until you are conversant with the game because other professional players will not appreciate if you are confused while playing live or making wrong moves.
3. Tendency to use foul language is high though the software filters out foul language, some players circumvent the ‘swear filter’, but there is really no need to be abusive.
4. Avoid unnecessarily comments during the game , either commenting on players who are not playing judiciously as they may be amateurs for all you know, or talk about the lucky ones etc., no one wants a voluntary poker lecture so stick to your game and your hand.
5. Keep the chat at reasonable levels incase you indulge in one as others around the table may like a smooth game of cards minus the chats, so be empathetic and put yourself in the ‘other person’s shoes’.
6. Keep up with the pace of the game and don’t lag behind unless for any technical reason, cause your fellow players may find you too laid back and even walk out during the game.
7. Try to use the autopost and pre-select functions generously as this will help you plan your moves.
8. Avoid commenting on a hand in progress it may not be appreciated by other players and also unwanted advice should be avoided.
The University of Manchester Poker Society has been successful in running these tournaments for the past four consecutive years for the student population of Manchester and has been noted for fair play and well organized tournaments.
