Online Bookies Betfred Refuse £823,000 Payout

In a recent article featured within the U.K’s Telegraph, it is claimed by Ralph Topping, CEO of William Hill, that Betfred management is setting a “poor example.” for online casinos and bookies alike. This comment originates over a dispute started by five gamblers in the Newmarket area, who claim they are owed a combined £823,000 by the Gibraltar-based online wing, Betfred. The new owner is refusing to pay out on these legal bets following a £4m gambling coup by trainer Barney Curley last year.

Mrs. Nesbit says in her blog, that this case does “not reflect well on some elements of the betting industry at the moment”.

Mr. Done, the non-conforming new owner of the Tote has paid out on wagers won by the U.K. customers of its 840 betting shops but has claimed these particular punts to be null and void.

Four of aforementioned individuals are relations of a Mr. Curley, a seventy year old man notorious for outsmarting the bookies, often betting on horses trained at his own Newmarket yard. Mr. Done is refusing to pay out on these wagers after Curley was responsible for an ambitious gamble in May of last year.

“However you feel about the moral arguments for or against Curley’s approach, the cold fact is these are legal bets and should be honoured.” Mrs. Nesbit continues. “There is no evidence of cheating. The British Horseracing Authority has declared horses ran according to official rating. There was absolutely no reason to disqualify the runners and therefore no reason to refuse a pay out.” She added to the Telegraph report, “The idea that a licensed bookmaker would even consider treating online and high street customers differently isn’t just a slippery slope, it’s absolutely precipitous.”

Betfred is claimed to be awaiting the results of an inquiry by Gibraltar’s betting Regulator and Authority before commenting on the story.
